Does Blue Cross Blue Shield cover pain management in Tennessee?
Yes. Interventional Pain Consultants accepts Blue Cross Blue Shield plans at our East Tennessee pain clinics — including BlueCare Tennessee, the BlueCross TennCare product.
Yes, we accept Blue Cross Blue Shield in Tennessee
BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee is the state's Blue carrier, and its employer, individual and marketplace plans are all plans we work with. If your coverage came through a Tennessee employer, there is a good chance this is your card.
We also accept BlueCare Tennessee — the BlueCross-run TennCare plan — so Medicaid members can be seen at the same clinics.
If your Blue plan was issued in another state, Blue carriers generally honor each other's members through the national BlueCard arrangement — call us and we will check how your home plan travels.
What BCBS plans typically cover for pain management
Most Blue Cross Blue Shield health plans cover interventional pain management when it is medically necessary — the evaluations, image-guided injections and nerve procedures that make up our core work. That typically includes care such as epidural steroid injections, medial branch blocks, radiofrequency ablation and spinal cord stimulation for conditions like back pain, neck pain, sciatica and radiculopathy. BCBST commercial and BlueCare set their rules differently, so we confirm your specific plan before your first visit.
Prior authorization
Some Blue Cross Blue Shield plans require prior authorization before certain procedures — commonly the implanted and radiofrequency treatments, sometimes injections after the first series. If your plan requires one, our team finds out during verification and handles the request with your plan, so an authorization requirement does not hold up your care.
What you can expect to pay
What you pay depends on your specific Blue Cross Blue Shield plan: most plans involve some mix of a copay, a deductible and coinsurance, and the split is different from plan to plan even within the same carrier. That is exactly what our verification covers — when we confirm your benefits we tell you what your plan pays and what you can expect to owe, in plain numbers, before you are seen.
How we verify your BCBS benefits
Request verification with your name and phone number, have your Blue Cross Blue Shield card handy, and our insurance team will confirm your coverage directly with your plan and call you back before your first visit.
Where you can be seen in Tennessee
Once your coverage is verified, you can be seen at our Tennessee clinics in Cleveland, Farragut and Oak Ridge. We also have an ambulatory surgery center in Cleveland for procedures that are better done in a dedicated surgical setting — your care team will tell you if that applies to you.
Common Blue Cross Blue Shield questions
Is BlueCare the same as Blue Cross Blue Shield?
BlueCare Tennessee is the TennCare (Medicaid) plan run by BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee. It is a different contract from commercial BCBS coverage — and we accept both.
Does BCBS of Tennessee cover radiofrequency ablation?
Most BCBS plans cover medically necessary interventional procedures, and radiofrequency ablation commonly carries a prior-authorization step. We confirm your plan’s rules during verification so nothing holds up your care.
Do I need a referral to be seen?
Most plans let you book with us directly. Some TennCare and HMO-style plans do route through a primary care provider — we check your plan's referral rules when we verify your benefits.
What about Blue Cross Medicare Advantage?
Medicare products are their own contracts. See the Medicare plans we accept on the insurance page, or call us with your card and we will check your specific plan.
