Conditions Treated

Partial rotator cuff tears, shoulder osteoarthritis, labral tears, biceps tendinopathy, AC joint arthritis, frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis), chronic shoulder pain after previous surgery

How It Works

Stem cells harvested from bone marrow are concentrated and injected into the shoulder joint and surrounding structures under ultrasound guidance. The regenerative cells differentiate into tendon, cartilage, and other tissue types needed for repair. Growth factors in the concentrate reduce inflammation and stimulate the body's natural healing cascade.

What to Expect

60-90 minute procedure. Local anesthesia with optional light sedation. You will wear a sling for a few days. Expect mild shoulder swelling for 1-2 weeks.

Recovery

Sling use for 3-5 days. Gentle range-of-motion exercises begin at 1-2 weeks. Progressive strengthening at 4-6 weeks. Full activity at 8-12 weeks. Physical therapy recommended.

Duration of Relief

In the shoulder, the result depends on the size of the tear, how long it has been there, and the quality of the surrounding tendon. That is what your imaging and the consultation are for.

Regulatory status. FDA approvals apply to specific products and conditions. For example, Ryoncil is approved for steroid-refractory acute graft-versus-host disease in children aged 2 months and older.[1] That approval does not cover the orthopedic treatments described here. A treatment that concentrates your own bone marrow or adipose tissue is not FDA-approved for rotator cuff or tendon conditions, and we will go through what that means for you, and what the alternatives are for your diagnosis.
You will wear a sling for a few days afterwards. The 60-90 minute procedure is done under local anesthesia with optional light sedation, and mild shoulder swelling is expected for 1-2 weeks. Whether it is an appropriate option depends on your imaging and what you have already tried, so request an appointment to go through both. Request an appointment
