A lumbar interlaminar epidural steroid injection delivers corticosteroid medication into the epidural space of the lower back through a midline approach between the vertebrae, reducing inflammation around multiple nerve roots simultaneously.

How It Works
Using fluoroscopic (live X-ray) guidance, your physician inserts a thin needle between two vertebrae in the lumbar spine and advances it into the epidural space.[1] Contrast dye confirms proper placement, then a combination of corticosteroid and local anesthetic is delivered to reduce inflammation around irritated nerve roots.
Treatment day
What to Expect
The procedure takes 15-30 minutes in our clinic or ambulatory surgery center. You will lie face down on a procedure table. After cleaning the skin and applying local anesthetic, your physician uses fluoroscopy to guide the needle. Most patients can return to light activities within 24-48 hours.
Afterward
Recovery
Temporary numbness or mild soreness at the injection site for 1-2 days. Pain relief typically begins within 2-7 days. Full benefit is usually felt within 2 weeks. A series of up to 3 injections may be recommended.
Duration of Relief
Relief typically lasts from several weeks to several months, and some patients go longer.
