Conditions Treated

Knee osteoarthritis, hip osteoarthritis, shoulder rotator cuff tears, chronic tendon injuries, degenerative disc disease, avascular necrosis, cartilage defects, ligament injuries

How It Works

Stem cells are harvested from your own body — typically from bone marrow (iliac crest) or adipose tissue — and concentrated using advanced processing techniques. The concentrated regenerative cells, rich in mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and growth factors, are then precisely injected into the damaged tissue under ultrasound or fluoroscopic guidance. These cells can differentiate into cartilage, bone, tendon, and other tissue types, aimed at the tissue itself rather than just masking symptoms.

What to Expect

60-120 minute procedure depending on harvest method and treatment sites. Bone marrow harvest involves brief pressure at the hip. The treatment is performed in our clinic with local anesthesia. Most patients go home the same day. Expect mild soreness at both the harvest and injection sites for several days.

Recovery

Mild soreness for 3-7 days. Avoid anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) for 2 weeks before and 4 weeks after treatment. Gradual return to activity over 4-8 weeks. Physical therapy may be recommended to optimize results.

Duration of Relief

How much a joint improves depends on how far the degeneration has already gone and on which harvest method is used. Your consultation covers what to expect for your own joint.

Regulatory status. FDA approvals apply to specific products and conditions. For example, Ryoncil is approved for steroid-refractory acute graft-versus-host disease in children aged 2 months and older.[1] That approval does not cover the orthopedic treatments described here. A treatment that concentrates your own bone marrow or adipose tissue is not FDA-approved for joint or spine conditions, and we will go through what that means for you, and what the alternatives are for your diagnosis.
How long this takes depends on the harvest method and how many sites are treated. It runs 60-120 minutes in our clinic under local anesthesia, and most patients go home the same day. Whether it is an appropriate option depends on your diagnosis and what you have already tried, so request an appointment to go through both. Request an appointment
