Pain in a peripheral joint — a knee, a hip, a shoulder — is usually treated with injections before anything more involved is considered.

A corticosteroid joint injection settles inflammation inside the joint capsule. Viscosupplementation adds hyaluronic acid, a lubricating gel, most often for knee arthritis. And when the inflamed structure is the bursa — the small cushioning sac beside the joint — a bursa injection treats it directly.
